Developing your voice in the Community.

Developing an effective voluntary organisation in under-represented areas is a major objective of Taunton Deane CVS. We try to encourage provision of voluntary services in these areas and once up and running we help to forge working relationships between volunteers and the various organisations that oversee the work of volunteers. Liaison with other voluntary groups is important in identifying needs in the community and regular contact with the local authority and statutory bodies such as the N.H.S. helps foster an increased understanding of the valuable role that volunteers play within the fabric of society.

November 2007.
Taunton Deane's Polish Association goes from strength to strength.  Almost one year from its beginnings in Taunton it has established itself as an active presence in the Deane, working with various organizations such as Somerset County Council, Taunton Deane, SREC and Somerset and Avon Constabulary promoting  understanding and good relations within the community.  The Association runs a weekly evening drop-in centre where Polish people can go for advice, and Somerset Community Foundation recently awarded it a grant of over £3,000 to establish an under-11 football team called Little Euros which is open to all children whatever their nationality, and also an after-school art class based at St Georges Catholic School.  The Association regularly holds evening get-togethers at various venues around Taunton where Polish people can meet each other and also get to know local Taunton people.

March 2007.
The Polish Association has been set up.  They have made contact with Avon Somerset Police, having invited Jim Hawkesworth, the Race/Hate Crime Officer to one of their meetings.  Two of TDBC's Equalities Coordinators will be coming to meet them at their next meeting on Monday 26 March 2007.  The Chair, Monika Stennett, and her colleague Karolina Surma, both with an interest in contacting and helping Polish parents especially isolated mothers with young children, will be meeting representatives of Sure Start.  They have also contacted Adult Learning & Leisure and English classes are to be set up. There is to be a monthly Polish column running in The Somerset County Gazette. In English and Polish, giving news of the community, with articles from different age-groups, different perspectives, and it is hoped that this will happen soon.
